Two ways to get HSBC transactions out
| PDF statement | Transaction download | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The official statement for a period | Your transaction list, filtered by a search |
| Formats | Excel (xls) or CSV | |
| Where | Online banking and the app | Online banking |
| History | Up to 6 years | Whatever your search returns |
| Accepted as a statement? | Yes | No, it's a search result |
The download is handy for a quick look. When an accountant, lender or auditor wants the statement itself, or you need a whole statement period with its opening and closing balances, start from the PDF.
How to download an HSBC UK PDF statement
In online banking
- Log on to online banking.
- In the quick links menu, select Statements.
- Choose the account and the statement type.
- Select the year and month, and the statement downloads as a PDF.
In the HSBC UK Mobile Banking app
- Log on to the app and select the account.
- Tap View statements.
- Select the month you want.
HSBC keeps up to 6 years of statements in online and mobile banking. If you need a printed copy, you can order a one-off statement through Chat, by phone if you're registered for telephone banking, or in a branch.
How to export HSBC transactions to Excel or CSV
- Log on to online banking and choose the account.
- Select Search and filter and set the date range (and amount or keyword, if you need them).
- Select Search.
- Scroll to the bottom of the transaction list, click Download, choose the format and select Continue.
When the download isn't enough
- It's not your statement. It doesn't carry the statement period, sheet numbers or opening and closing balances that make a statement easy to reconcile.
- Someone sent you PDFs. Accountants and bookkeepers often receive a client's statements as PDFs, with no access to their online banking.
- Business app limits. HSBC's business app shows up to 12 months of transaction history for sterling accounts, and only the last 30 days for credit card and foreign currency accounts. For other formats you need Business Internet Banking.
Converting an HSBC PDF statement
An HSBC statement shows payments in and payments out, with opening and closing balances for the period, and can run over several numbered sheets. Pasting it into Excel usually scrambles those columns. AI Bank Statement reads the statement as laid out:
- Upload one or more HSBC PDF statements. Batch upload handles a year of monthly statements at once.
- Pick the output: Excel, CSV, JSON, Xero CSV, or QuickBooks 3- or 4-column CSV.
- Download one transaction per row, with date, description, money out, money in and balance in separate columns.
Dates stay day-first, amounts stay in pounds, and HSBC's transaction codes stay with each line's description, so nothing is lost.
Getting HSBC data into Xero or QuickBooks
If your bank feed is missing a period, or a client has only sent PDFs, import the converted statement:
- Xero: choose Xero CSV, then import it as a bank statement for the matching account.
- QuickBooks: choose the 3- or 4-column CSV that matches your import settings, then upload it from file.
HSBC credit card statements are monthly too, and convert the same way with the credit card statement converter.
