Things to know about BMO statements
- Seven years online. eStatements are stored for seven years after they're posted; save or print anything you need to keep longer.
- One statement per account. BMO issues a separate statement for each account you hold.
- Paper costs more than it used to. A paper statement is $2.75 each, a statement copy $5.00, and eStatements are free.
- Cheque images aren't in eStatements. You can see the last three months of cheque images in Online Banking; older ones are a per-item request.
- Report errors quickly. BMO's agreement asks you to report problems within 30 days of the statement date for monthly statements, another reason to get statements into a spreadsheet you can check.
Business: BMO and QuickBooks Online
BMO business accounts connect directly to QuickBooks Online: select Connect Account in QuickBooks, choose Bank of Montreal Canada โ Business, sign in with your BMO Online Banking credentials and pick the accounts. You can view up to two years of transaction details for chequing and savings accounts, and up to three months plus the current month for business credit cards.
For anything outside that window, a different accounting app, or a client who sent PDFs, convert the statements instead.
Converting a BMO PDF statement
- Upload one or more BMO eStatements. Batch upload handles a year of monthly statements at once.
- Pick the output: Excel, CSV, JSON, Xero CSV, or QuickBooks 3- or 4-column CSV.
- Download one transaction per row, with date, description, withdrawals, deposits and balance in separate columns.
Amounts stay in dollars, and dates are written out consistently, so check that your accounting software's import date setting matches.
Getting BMO data into QuickBooks or Xero
- QuickBooks: choose the 3- or 4-column CSV and upload it from file. QuickBooks Online Canada takes up to 1,000 lines per upload.
- Xero: choose Xero CSV and import it as a bank statement for the matching account.
BMO credit card eStatements convert with the credit card statement converter.
